Executive Board Reports

President:  Terri Bacon

  • Terri Called meeting to order at 3:02.
  • March 23 Minutes approved were approved via email following that meeting.

Vice President:  Patty Harmon

  • Room requests for 2024 submitted on April 5, 2023.  Confirmations not yet received.
  • With respect to luncheons, the burger bar event following the Lone Ranger tournament was successful.  The seating reserved on the Grill patio following the Team Challenge was well-attended and worked well as a smaller group gathering.  Patty will consider using the Grill Patio for future post-golf meals.  Attempts to get Regina to allow pre-ordering have so far been unsuccessful, but Patty will continue trying to persuade her.  The next luncheon event is August 24, before the General meeting.  Based on cost, Patty will organize another buffet-style meal.
  • Patty reported some high-level survey results: we had 69 respondents.  Pricing and menu options for luncheons are barriers to greater participation.  Sixty one percent of respondents would like to participate in a non-golf social, and favored having such an event in the Madera clubhouse.
  • Based on the positive response to a non-golf social, Patty has formed a committee (Linda Price and Stacia Sower) to assist with planning something for mid-October.  Looking at a $15pp appetizer event, perhaps with a featured cocktail, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Secretary:  Michele Gazica – No Report

Treasurer:  Marie Cook

  • Quarterly financials will be published on the website after June 30.
  • All member-guest invoices have been paid.

Past President:  Dena Knox- No Report

Tournament Chair:  Deb Riddell-No Report

Handicap Committee:  Cheryl Opsal, Bonny Wilcox and Jan Delcour

  • 12 of the QCLGA 132 members do not play in QCLGA events.  As a courtesy, Cheryl will let them know that they can get and maintain a GHIN handicap without having to join the QCLGA.
  • Posting non-competition scores continues to be an issue with some members.  Cheryl asked that we put a reminder in the Blast, and repeat the reminder on a regular basis.  The Board discussed how to enforce the requirement to post scores, and supports the Handicap Committee using the authority granted by the WHS to post penalty scores for those members who do not post nor respond to multiple requests to post scores.  Another remedy approved by the Board is to refuse tournament admission to chronic posting refuseniks.

Rules Committee:  Bonny Wilcox, Stacia Sower, Phyllis O’Brien and Julia Fox-No Report

Webmaster:  Cheryl Opsal

  • Low quality pictures will not be posted on the website.

Ringers, Birdies and Chip-ins:  Phyllis O’Brien – No Report

Hole in One:  Dena Knox – No Report

Membership/Hospitality:  Kandi Roy

  • No Report, however, Terri asked the board to consider combining the Membership and Hospitality Committee with the Publicity Committee to increase efficiency.

AWGA/SDWGA:  Kathy Brogdon

  • Terri reported on behalf of Kathy and Marie Cook that Kathy provided the Del Sud results.  They will be reported in The Blast. Marie is working with the Pro-shop to get winnings credited to the books.

Publicity:  Janet Johnson

  • Janet is focusing efforts on the Quail Crossing publication, rather than publications distributed outside of Quail Creek.

Interclub:  Linda Ulery and Jacquie Owens

  • Linda reported that QCLGA placed fourth in the Desert Hills event, however, we remain in last place in overall standings.

Awards:  Lindsay Dickinson – No Report

Junior Golf:  Patty Zatkin

  • Patty reported she has not received responses from Marvol Barnard regarding our interest in donating equipment to Girls Golf.  Terri reported that David Friel (a QC resident) accepts donations at his home, and delivers them to First Tee in Tucson.

New Business:

  • Storage:  Maureen and Terri reported on the QCLGA storage facility, which is a locked cabinet in the Mesquite Room of the Kino Conference Center.  They unearthed stale financial records that need to be purged, and some photo albums which should be displayed at a future ladies’ event for members to take photos they may wish to keep.  They have stored the Member Guest sponsor signs there.  (The metal stands for the foregoing signs are stored in Terri Bacon’s garage attic. )  Terri and Maureen created an inventory, and sign-out sheet for items contained in the storage facility.  Going forward, any items removed from the facility must be signed out.  Terri has the key.
  • Member Guest:  Janet Johnson asked for feedback on the Member Guest tournament.  She said the committee is seeking input:  good, bad or ugly.
  • Committees:  Terri asked Janet when the Board should seek volunteer to chair the 2024 Member Guest.  Janet advised the committee had been formed and began working in October 2022 for the 2023 event.  Terri will solicit volunteers through the Blast for both the Member Guest and other QCLGA standing committees.
  • Nominating Committee:  Patty Zatkin agreed to chair the nominating committee for the 2024 slate of officers.   Terri Bacon and Michele Gazica have agreed to continue in their roles as President and Secretary (if approved by the membership). QCLGA will be seeking replacement for Marie Cook as Treasurer, and Judith Olson would accept a nomination for the role.  Neither the Vice President nor the Tournament Chair have committed for 2024.

Meeting adjourned at 4:59

Respectfully Submitted

Executive Board Reports

President:  Terri Bacon

  • Terri requested a motion to call the meeting to order. Moved by Deb Riddell, seconded by Kandi Roy.
  • Welcome new board members, committee heads and members.
  • Minutes from November 9, 2022 approved with motion from Cheryl Opsal, seconded by Dena Knox.
  • March Board meeting moved from March 22, 2023 to March 15, 2023 due to distractions from QCLGA Championship.
  • Terri requested that 2023 budget requests be prepared in time for a budget meeting near the end of January (date TBD). Marie Cook will prepare spending reports for Committee heads to use as reference for 2023 budget requests.

Vice President:  Patty Harmon

  • Patty met with Epi to explore lower costs alternatives to catered meals for post-golf gatherings. Possibilities include using the Madera Copper Lounge and Patio Area rather than the ballroom, and lower cost meals such as Baked Potato Bar and Hamburger Bar. Reached consensus to try this following the Lone Ranger tournament on April 6.
  • Patty will work with Regina Hartman to reserve as many tables as the Grill will allow following the Team Challenge on May 24.
  • Patty is forming a committee to work on a non-golf social event in Fall, to welcome back snowbirds and meet new members. Anyone interested in joining this committee should email Patty.

Secretary:  Michele Gazica – No Report

Treasurer:  Marie Cook

  • Financials for year ended 2022 submitted to Web Master for posting to LGA website
  • Audit of 2022 financials completed by Brenda Allred and Chris Gould identified no issues
  • Hole in One Club has 40 members, 2 retired.  Total on books is $210
  • RBCs has 74 members as of January 6, 2023 for a total of $1,332.
  • Southern District has 47 members for a total of $235
  • General Membership is at 127, creating income of $3,125. Budget meeting will be organized for late January.
  • Signature cards for new Board Members (Terri Bacon, Patty Harmon and Michele Gazica) were completed at BMO Harris Bank Friday, January 6.

Past President:  Dena Knox

  • Robson Challenge will take place at Robson Ranch in November. Date has not been finalized, but it is expected to be November 15, 2023. Dena is attempting to change the date because it conflicts with the Couples Club Championship.
  • QCLGA is participating for the second year in Kachina Dolls. The Kachina Dolls run tournaments from November to May, in an ABCD format. Depending on the field size, each club may be limited in the number of golfers who can play in any given tournament, usually between 6 and 8 players. The host club has unlimited golfers.  Quail Creek is hosting in December.  The size of the field may be limited by the number of golf carts available for rent. Signup for the tournaments is currently first come, first served, but this could change if demand grows. At El Conquistador, we had two golfers; at Arizona National, we had three golfers; at Quarry Pines we had 10 golfers. Upcoming tournaments are Skyline February 6, Saddle Brook March 27 and Tubac May 1. Membership in the organization costs QCLGA $50/year, which will be reflected in the budget request.

Tournament Chair:  Deb Riddell

  • Ringers, Birdies, Chip-ins:  Deb is trying to get Golf Genius to calculate Ringers for each 9-hole course the QCLGA play Days. If tech support cannot solve the issue, Deb will still be able to provide the RBC Chair, Phyllis O’Brien with a gross ringer spreadsheet that will facilitate inputting Ringer data on a spreadsheet. Chip-ins will continue to be manual, based on backup scorecards.
  • Golf Genius Portal Changes:  Deb added a several statistical reports including a “most improved” player report. Bonny stated that the Handicap Committee likes to announce this as a surprise at the year-end luncheon and suggested the report be taken down in late Summer. Deb also modified Golf Genius portal to allow members to view stats on birdies and added interclub inter-club participation reports.
  • The 2024 Calendar has been completed so it can be used for 2024 room requests, which are accepted starting the end of March 2023.  Exact date is TBD.
  • There is a new Tournament Sub-Committee to brainstorm new ideas for games. Brenda Allred, Cherie McDaniels and Terry Nicholson are members.
  • Radie Haytack and Robin Brannan are working on the Team Challenge colors and team names for 2023.

Handicap Committee:  Cheryl Opsal, Bonny Wilcox and Jan Delcour – No Report

Rules Committee:  Bonny Wilcox, Stacia Sower, Phyllis O’Brien and Julia Fox

  • Bonny submitted monthly Rule Reminders for the News Blast and Website. She also sent the updated 2023 Local Rules prepared by Russ Adamson for upload to the Website.
  • The Committee conducted a Basic Rules Demonstration at the Golf Academy January 10, 2023. There were approximately 30 attendees.  Noah Gessler, Greens Superintendent, gave a presentation of how to fill divots, repair ball marks and rake bunkers. Regarding the rules, it was evident many of the 9ers were not aware of Local Rule additions. Bonny sent an email to Sherry Gall and Carol Wood to see how they want future changes or additions communicated. Jan Topolski, who was a member of both the 18 and 9-hole leagues used to disseminate the information.
  • Bonny said that the USGA no longer prints rule books, and the Pro-shop is no longer selling them. Both are encouraging use of on-line rules.

Webmaster:  Cheryl Opsal

  • Cheryl requested meeting dates from Terri Bacon, the Southern District Roster from Kathy Brogdon, games definitions from Deb Riddell so she can update the website. She presented the issue of balancing information access to potential new members with privacy concerns for officers. It was resolved to use the existing officer page with phone numbers only, and remove email addresses.  (Postscript, January 15:  Cheryl created a Membership Enquiries item on the Home Page to better address this issue.)
  • The Word Press license used for our website expires in 2023. Cheryl will research renewal rates and present options in her budget request for 2023.

Ringers, Birdies and Chip-ins:  Phyllis O’Brien

  • Phyllis will utilize information from the Back-Up Scorecards for RBC’s with input from Golf Genius Data as appropriate

Hole in One:  Dena Knox

  • Cost to join is $5.  There is a roster maintained by Dena. If a member wishes to join, the process is to give Marie Cook a check (no cash!) for $5, and send Dena an email.

Membership/Hospitality:  Kandy Roy and Kathy Printz

  • Kandi reported that the membership packet of written materials may not be fully utilized by new members, and is therefore an unnecessary drain on human, paper and ink resources. Cheryl Opsal offered to make a one-page printout of the information available on the website. Terri requested to undergo the new member orientation with existing material, and then decide what materials to include, if any, in a new-member package.
  • No report on number of members.

AWGA/SDWGA:  Kathy Brogdon

  • 47 members signed up for 2023, down from 54 in 2022.  QCLGA’s AGA registration form has been submitted. The Handicap Chair needs to be changed from Jan Delcour to Cheryl Opsal.

Publicity:  Kathy Thompson – No Report

Interclub:  Linda Ulery and Jacquie Owens

  • The Green Valley Interclub captains met January 5, and decided to play again this year, with five clubs participating. Play dates will be monthly, April through August. Quail Creek hosts June 8. The format for all competitions will be Stableford.  Gross and net winners. Teams will consist of eight players and cart pairings will be with players from the same clubs. The qualifying events will be discontinued. Jacquie and Linda will solicit interested players. If ever there are more players than spaces, Jacquie and Linda will select the team.  There needs to be a description of the Interclub program on the website, with selection criteria for teams.

Awards:  Lindsay Dickinson – No Report

Junior Golf:  Patty Zatkin

  • Marvol Barnard is asking for gently used golf equipment. Patty will collect it and see that it gets to Marvol.  There will be a fundraiser in March, but no date has been set. The LGA needs to consider whether it will include support for Girls Golf in its 2023 budget.

New Business:

Member Guest (Copper Quail Classic):  Bobbi Jo Rathvon and Janet Johnson

  • Bobbi Jo reported that an optional Horserace will be conducted on Tuesday, April 18 following the practice round (11am shotgun). In connection with the Horserace, the Committee is looking for a beer sponsor and assistance with parimutuel betting, possibly from spouses or the MGA. Cheryl Opsal volunteered her spouse to assist.
  • Format for the competition will be Best Ball and Chapman. Theme is TBD.
  • Janet reported on fundraising. The goal is to obtain hole sponsorships from businesses so we do not have to rely on contributions from individuals residing in Quail Creek. In addition to sponsorships, the committee will raise funds in support of the event with a Money Tree, 50/50 raffles at Thursday play days. The sponsor and donations sub-committee will meet Thursday, January 12.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun:  Bonny Wilcox

  • Event takes place Thursday, January 26.  Signup deadline is January 16. Last year there were 20 players from each of the Putters, the 9ers and the QCLGA. This year, so far, there are 48 ‘9ers, 30 QCLGA ‘18ers and less than that from the Putters. Bonny will send a reminder and Bobbi Jo will ask folks directly before Thursday January 12 playday. Bonny will consider altering the format to accommodate all of the ‘9ers that have signed up.

Other
